Yesterday one of the Save Southwark Woods campaigners Lewis Schaffer requested access to Area Z for a site inspection amid fears of a large tree having been felled.
He was allowed to enter the site and saw that a large tree had been cut down of at least 35cm diameter - over a metre in girth.
If on consecrated ground as it seems to be, this is completely illegal. And whatever kind of ground it is on it is morally wrong - we need all our trees and woodland.
Woods are not just trees, they are also the undergrowth and the established woodland soils that absorb so much rainwater and produce fresh oxygen we rely on for life and health.
Southwark Council's project will produce 700 grave plots. That's it. For taking down a Grade 1 SINC wood. In 2016.
But this is just the first part of Southwark's Super Cemetery program.
Soon the Council intend to fell dozens of trees on One Tree Hill - for 140 grave plots!
And then begins the destruction of the rest of the Old Cemetery Grade 1 SINC woods.
In the face of objections from thousands of local residents and without waiting for permission from the Church of England.
This is democracy. It's not even in the public interest. This is barbaric, insitutionalised vandalism and desecration.
Leader of the One Person State Southwark Council Peter John should be ashamed of himself.
