Dear Friends of Southwark Woods, the Camberwell Cemeteries,
On this day last year, April Fools Day, Save Southwark Woods was constituted as a community group to defend the Camberwell Cemeteries (in East Dulwich and Honor Oak) and to make them nature reserves.
We are due an AGM and I'll be in touch very soon about this.
Together with now over 11,000 supporters, we have been calling Southwark Council and councillors to protect Camberwell Old and New Cemeteries, with respect for the dead and woods for the living. The response has been appalling.
Two acres of woods, many hundreds of trees have already been felled in Camberwell Old Cemetery. Up to 60 trees are planned to be felled on One Tree Hill. The Honor Oak Rec is still under threat and the Council's so-called Cemetery Stakeholder Group has been ridden roughshod over.
But ten acres of woods and tens of thousands of graves are still to be saved and we will keep fighting.
This is a national story as, if Southwark get to bulldoze though against such a huge public outcry, cemeteries around the country will be at the same risk.
The Evening Standard came to film today for a video documentary on this story to go out next weekend - I'll send you a link to this as soon as it is published.
We are still waiting to hear from the Diocese of Southwark about the hearing into Southwark's permission for works - much of which has already been carried out. I have to say, our faith in the Church of England at the moment is not strong!
We had a wonderful day of tours on Monday of the Cemeteries with lots of new faces.
We hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 7.30pm at the Herne Tavern on Forest Hill Road SE22 0RR, do come, all are welcome. It's good fun :-)
Wishing you all a very good Easter break and thanks again for your support, we couldn't do it without you.
Best wishes as always,
for Save Southwark Woods
